A STRUCTURED, STEP-BY-STEP HANDWRITING PROGRAM FOR PARENTS
The Handwriting Made Easy Program takes you through handwriting development in the same order I follow with children in the clinic. Twelve weeks. One step at a time. So you always know what to focus on and why.
You have practised the same letters over and over.
You have tried different workbooks, lined paper, pencil grips.
You have sat beside your child at the kitchen table and guided their hand through each word.
Some days, the writing looks fine. Other days, the very same letters come out completely different.
A teacher may have mentioned it at pickup. Or you have noticed it yourself. Writing tasks take longer than they should. Homework that should take ten minutes stretches to thirty. Your child writes a word well once, then loses it by the next line.
Sometimes they are described as rushing, or not paying attention, or not trying hard enough. But you can see the effort. You know that is not the full picture.
And you are left quietly asking yourself:
Why does this keep changing?
What am I supposed to focus on first?
Is there an order I should be following?
There is. And it makes a real difference.
Handwriting follows a clear developmental sequence. There is an order to it.
But most parents are never shown what that order is. Instead, they are told to keep practising, to be patient, to give it time.
And so they do. They try one approach, then another, without knowing what to prioritise or why.
That is not a parenting problem. It is an information gap. And it is one that a structured process can close.
In the clinic, handwriting development is worked through in a specific sequence: observation first, then setup, then formation, then speed. Each step builds on the one before it.
When you follow that sequence in the right order, things begin to make sense.
Hi, I am Esmé.
Over more than 25 years of working with children and families, I have seen the same pattern with handwriting again and again. Parents practise the same letters, in no particular order, without knowing what to prioritise or what their child is ready for. And when progress does not stick, they assume they are doing something wrong.
They are not doing anything wrong. They are just working without a sequence.
In the clinic, I follow a specific order when working through handwriting with a child. We observe first. We set up the foundations. Then we work through formation, step by step, before building speed and ease. That order is not random. It is the order that works.
The Handwriting Made Easy Program brings that same clinical sequence to families at home. Each week has a clear focus, and each week builds on the one before it.
I am a paediatric occupational therapist and the founder of Skill Sense® OT. My clinical work is grounded in Ayres Sensory Integration®, an advanced, evidence-informed framework for understanding how the foundational systems of development influence what we see on the surface, including handwriting.
"You do not need more worksheets. You need to know what to focus on, in what order, and why. That is what changes the experience of handwriting at home."
This program follows the same step-by-step process I use with children in the clinic. It is broken into four clear phases, and each week builds on the one before it.
We begin by looking at how your child is writing right now, using a simple observation sheet. This gives us a clear starting point. We also look at the setup around writing: posture, paper position, pencil grip, and the everyday details that can make writing feel harder than it needs to.
This is the main body of the program. We work through letter formation in a clear sequence, covering printing first and then numbers. Each week builds on the last, with practical home activities to carry the learning through.
Once formation is more settled, the focus moves to writing with more ease. The goal here is for handwriting to become something your child can do without thinking hard about every letter.
In the final weeks, we return to the same observation sheet from the start. This gives you a simple way to see what has changed and a clear picture to take forward.
Every week includes something practical to work on at home, so what you cover in each session carries into everyday life.
RESERVE YOUR PLACEThe program is designed to build steady progress without overwhelming busy families. Each week builds gently on the last.
This program is not:
It is a clear, structured, step-by-step process. The same one used in the clinic, brought to your home one week at a time.
Practical resources included with your enrolment, yours to keep and use at home.
A space to ask questions and connect with other parents working through the program.
Simple ways to bring handwriting into daily routines without it feeling like extra homework.
Activities that make practising letters feel more like play.
Templates to help your child develop a feel for the right amount of space between letters and words.
A simple way to help your child tell b and d apart.
Ways to practise letter formation using touch and movement alongside pencil and paper.
Templates showing the size and proportions for each letter, to use as a reference at home.
Quick warm-up exercises for little hands before writing sessions.
A list of frequently used words, useful for practice once letter formation is more settled.
A fun way to practise writing words and sentences your child will actually enjoy.
The same observation sheet used at the start and end of the program. Yours to keep using at home.
Handwriting difficulties do not tend to resolve on their own. When the underlying foundations are not supported, the difficulty often stays the same or gradually becomes harder to untangle.
Over time, the gap between what a child wants to express and what their hand can manage can grow wider. Writing tasks take longer. Frustration builds. Some children begin to avoid writing altogether.
This does not mean your child is not trying. It means the writing process needs more support than practice alone can provide.
You do not need to wait until things feel overwhelming before taking a step. You just need to be paying attention. And the fact that you are here suggests you already are.
The Handwriting Made Easy Program is a structured 12-week parent program guided by an experienced paediatric occupational therapist.
Individual occupational therapy sessions in Australia commonly range between $180 and $220 per session. The Handwriting Made Easy Program offers a complete 12-week structured program, including weekly live sessions, direct contact with Esmé, and access to all recordings and materials.
Enrolment opens 22 June and closes 16 July. Sessions begin Monday 20 July.

When the foundations are understood and supported in the right order, the experience of writing can begin to feel different for your child. Practice has a purpose. Each week builds on the last. And you know what you are working on and why.
Parents who have been through this kind of structured process often describe feeling clearer and more confident in how they are supporting their child. Not because someone gave them a list of tips, but because they now understand what is happening underneath.
When we understand what is happening, we can respond differently. That is where this program begins.
Many parents arrive here after months of practising without a plan, wondering what to focus on next and whether they are on the right track.
The Handwriting Made Easy Program was created for exactly that parent. A clear process, in a clear order, guided week by week.
If having a step-by-step way to support your child's handwriting at home feels like what your family needs right now, you are warmly invited to join us.
