For parents preparing their child for formal schooling

School Readiness Involves More Than Letters and Numbers.

Everything before the pencil.

Pencil Ready is a five-week parent programme that brings clear teaching together with guided, play-based activities to use at home. It prepares your child for the move into formal school without starting formal schoolwork early.

Five weeks  |  Live parent teaching  |  Guided home activities  |  Weekly Q&A  |  Recordings included  |  12 months' access

Children do not become school ready on their fifth birthday

Formal school begins on a set date, though the readiness a child brings with them does not arrive on the same schedule.

Most of what a child draws on once school begins is built gradually across the year before, through movement, play and ordinary use of the hands, rather than appearing because a birthday has passed or an enrolment form has been submitted.

Because of that, readiness is not simply about age, knowing letters and numbers, or being able to write a name. Those parts are easy to see and easy to measure, so they tend to attract most of the attention in the year before school.

The foundations underneath them develop more quietly, over months, and they are the part parents are least often shown.

Preparing well means giving those foundations time, in the year when your child still has it.

More activities are not usually what is missing

There is no shortage of school readiness ideas online. You can find printables, tracing pages, cutting activities, alphabet games, crafts and fine motor ideas within minutes. Some are useful and many are enjoyable, but it can still be difficult to know how they fit together.

You may be left wondering why you are offering a particular activity, what you should be watching for while your child does it, and whether it is the most useful place to begin.

The difficulty is rarely finding another activity. It is knowing what needs to come first, and how one experience builds towards the next.

Pencil Ready gives you a structured sequence rather than another collection of disconnected ideas.

Each week takes you step by step through guided activities designed to promote the foundations children draw on as they move into formal schooling. The sequence itself, and the developmental reasoning behind it, are taught inside the programme.

Preparing does not mean starting school early at home

Pencil Ready does not ask young children to spend long periods completing worksheets or practising next year's formal schoolwork.

Children at this age still learn through doing. They learn while moving, building, carrying, opening, sorting, finding, making, pretending and taking part in everyday routines. The activities can stay playful and age-appropriate while still being chosen for a clear reason.

This is the stage before formal pencil work. It is everything before the pencil.

A clearer way to prepare

Pencil Ready brings the explanation, the activities and the sequence together in one five-week programme. You will not be expected to work out where to start or piece a plan together from different sources. Every week works the same way, and you do not need an occupational therapy background to follow any of it.

At the start of the week

Understand

Each week opens with a live parent teaching session of about thirty minutes, where I explain what we are building that week and why it has been chosen for this point in the sequence.

You come away knowing what you are working on, and where it sits in the bigger picture.

Through the week

Use

You then receive the guided activities for that week, laid out step by step, using ordinary household items. The activity guides and visual resources carry the detail for you.

You come away with the week planned and ready to use, without a rigid daily timetable to keep up with.

As your child takes part

Notice

As your child takes part, I guide you in what to look for beyond whether the activity was finished, and you can bring questions to the weekly session, the private Facebook space or email.

You come away better able to read what your child is showing you, week after week.

Why I created Pencil Ready

Esmé, paediatric occupational therapist and founder of Skill Sense OT

Most parents I meet in the year before school are already doing plenty. They are reading together, buying the activity books, sitting down at the table on a Sunday afternoon. What they are less sure about is whether any of it is the right thing to be doing right now, or whether they should be doing something else altogether.

That uncertainty is the part I would like to take off your hands.

I am Esmé, a paediatric occupational therapist with around twenty five years of experience working with children and families. In that time I have met many capable children who could finish a task, though only by working much harder than the finished result suggested. Effort like that is easy to miss, and easy to mistake for the task being fine.

I have also worked with many thoughtful parents who did not need more ideas. What they needed was a clearer order to follow, and someone to explain what to look for while they followed it.

Pencil Ready brings that together in a format you can use at home, alongside me, over five weeks.

You are not being asked to become your child's therapist or teacher. I bring the sequence and the reasoning behind it. You bring what you know about your own child and how your family's week actually runs.

What parents have said about learning with Skill Sense® OT

The following feedback relates to other Skill Sense® OT programmes and services. It is included to describe parents' experience of the resources, organisation and communication, rather than a treatment or child outcome.

"I loved the detailed weekly activity guides and picture overview of the weekly activities. It was easy to read and understand and apply. They are great resources that I can continue to use and refer back to beyond the program." Parent feedback from Strong Fingers
"The course was so well organised and easy to implement into your everyday life. Esmé was friendly and helpful and I felt so well supported throughout." Parent feedback from Strong Fingers
"Great communication that is clear and informative. We loved our experience." R, mother of Mr T
Pencil Ready is educational in nature and does not replace individual occupational therapy assessment. Where a child's needs require personalised clinical support, individual assessment is recommended.

Frequently asked questions

What age is Pencil Ready for?

Pencil Ready is intended for children approaching formal schooling. Most will be around five to six years old, although some may be four and turning five depending on where they live. The programme is based on the child's stage rather than one exact birthday. Younger children are welcome, and some activities may need adjusting to suit them.

Is this a handwriting programme?

No. Pencil Ready focuses on everything before formal pencil work. It does not teach handwriting, letter formation or academic content.

Does my child attend the teaching sessions?

No. The teaching sessions are for parents. You then use the guided activities with your child during the week.

What happens if I cannot attend live?

Every live session is recorded and made available afterwards, and you keep access to those recordings for twelve months.

How much time will we need each week?

The parent teaching sessions run for approximately thirty minutes. The guided activities are designed to be used flexibly across the week rather than delivered as a formal daily lesson, and you will not be expected to complete every activity.

Do I need specialist equipment?

Most activities use ordinary household items. The weekly guide explains what you need.

How long will I have access?

You have access to the programme teaching and resources for twelve months.

A clear plan for everything before the pencil

You do not need to begin formal schoolwork early, or collect more disconnected activities. Pencil Ready gives you a practical, step-by-step way to support your child as formal school approaches, while keeping the learning playful, manageable and appropriate for this stage.
