What this pattern means
Your child avoids writing tasks. There may be outbursts, refusals, or a shutdown when writing is expected. Homework becomes a battle. School mornings can be tense.
This is one of the most exhausting patterns for parents to navigate. And it is one of the most misunderstood.
What looks like defiance or laziness is almost always something else. It is a child who has found that writing demands more than they can comfortably manage, and avoidance has become their way of coping.
A different way to see it
Children in the Frustration pattern are not choosing to make things difficult. They are doing the only thing that makes sense when a task feels overwhelming. When we understand what is making writing hard, we can change the approach, and the behaviour usually follows.
