Parent Learning and Support
Resources to help you understand what sits behind posture and stamina difficulties, and support your child to sit, move and keep going with more ease.
What it is and why it matters
Postural control is your child's ability to hold their body upright and steady, using the muscles of the trunk, neck and shoulders to stay stable against gravity. Endurance is the ability to sustain this effort over time, so your child can keep sitting, standing or moving without tiring. These two systems work closely together, and they sit underneath almost every seated and active task, from handwriting and mealtimes to PE and the playground.
When postural control or endurance are still developing, a child may slump, lean on the table or their own arm, fidget, or ask for frequent breaks during seated tasks. They may also tire quickly during active play, hold back from sustained effort, or seem worn out by the end of the school day. This can look like poor concentration or low motivation, when it often reflects how much effort it takes simply to stay upright and keep going. Understanding what is behind this can change how it is supported.
Rather than reminders to sit up straight or push through tiredness, the resources on this page help you understand what may be making posture and stamina harder for your child right now. With that understanding, support at home can be more structured and better matched to what your child needs.
