Parent Learning and Support
Resources to help you understand how your child takes in and responds to everyday sensory information, and why some experiences can feel more challenging than others.
What it is and why it matters
Sensory processing is how the brain receives, organises and responds to information from the senses, including touch, movement, sound, sight and body awareness. It happens automatically, and it shapes how a child reacts to everyday experiences such as noise, clothing, food textures or busy spaces.
When sensory processing is working smoothly, a child can filter out what is not important and focus on what is. When it is still developing, or working differently, everyday situations can feel more intense. This can affect attention, emotions, movement and behaviour in ways that are not always obvious.
Rather than focusing on behaviour alone, the resources on this page help you understand what may be happening for your child at a sensory level. With that understanding, support at home and school can be more structured and better matched to what your child needs.

Making sense of sensory processing
Sensational Senses is a structured program for parents who want a clear way to understand and support their child's sensory processing. It is currently in development, and will bring together what we know about how children take in, organise and respond to sensory information into a step by step approach for home.
